Somerford Township was established in Madison County, Ohio in 1839. Its boundaries are the Clark County line to the west and north, Route 38 on the east; the southern border extends approximately one and one half miles south of U.S. Rt. 40. No municipalities are located in Somerford Township although the census-designated place of Choctaw Lake and the unincorporated community of Summerford lie in the township's southern portion.

Somerford Township is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of four cemeteries; three are located on St. Rt. 56, the largest of these being Somerford Cemetery at 830 St. Rt. 56 NW, and there is a small cemetery on Arbuckle Road NW. There are fourteen miles of township roads.             

Since 1972, Somerford Township has been the only township in Madison County with its own zoning regulations. There are two five-member Zoning Boards: the Zoning Board and the Zoning Board of Appeals. They meet regularly during the year and as needed to address the growing number of zoning issues and concerns.
